Phu Quoc Ridgeback
A ridge of forward-growing hair gives the Phu Quoc ridgeback its best-known feature. This Vietnamese island dog comes from Phu Quoc and nearby areas, and it developed separately from other ridged breeds such as the Thai ridgeback and Rhodesian ridgeback. Dogs are medium-sized, muscular, short-coated, and often described as agile swimmers and climbers, with a curled tail and a wedge-shaped head. Traditional accounts place them as hunting and guarding dogs in a hot, humid coastal environment, where endurance and self-reliance mattered.
In households, a Phu Quoc ridgeback needs more than casual exercise; it benefits from running space, structured training, and a securely fenced yard. The breed can be devoted to family yet reserved with strangers, so early socialization is important. Its coat is easy to maintain, though skin, ears, and feet still need attention in damp climates. International recognition and pedigree depth vary, so buyers should ask how dogs are documented and selected. Any ridged-line breeding should also take dermoid sinus screening seriously.
