Podenco Valenciano
The Podenco Valenciano, also called the xarnego valenciano or Valencian podenco, is a regional Spanish hunting dog from the Valencian Community. It belongs to the podenco group, but local breeders have maintained their own type for rabbit hunting in orchards, scrub, and dry inland terrain. Depending on the line or registry description, dogs may appear in more than one size and coat type, usually with a lean body, erect ears, strong feet, and quick, alert movement. The breed is less familiar internationally than the Podenco Canario or Ibizan hound, and names can vary in rescue and hunting circles.
Practical care centers on channeling a high prey drive and an independent hunting style. A Podenco Valenciano generally needs secure fencing, thoughtful recall training, and exercise that lets it use its nose as well as its legs. Many are gentle in the home once settled, but timid or undersocialized dogs need careful exposure to new people and places. Grooming depends on coat type and is usually straightforward. Anyone adopting or buying one should ask about working background, size, coat, and cat safety, since regional podenco labels do not always predict an individual dog's behavior.
