Portuguese Pointer
The Portuguese Pointer, or Perdigueiro Português, is a medium-sized gundog developed in Portugal for finding and pointing game birds, especially partridge. It has a compact muscular body, a broad expressive head, dropped ears, and a short coat usually seen in yellow, reddish yellow, or related shades, sometimes with white markings. The breed traditionally works close to the hunter rather than ranging far across open country, and its biddable nature made it useful in dense Iberian terrain.
In a modern home, the Portuguese Pointer needs regular field-style exercise, scenting opportunities, and patient training that builds on cooperation rather than pressure. Many are strongly attached to their people and can be sensitive to harsh handling. The short coat is easy to maintain, but ears, nails, and weight still need routine attention, especially for dogs working in brush. Health-focused breeders commonly discuss hip and elbow status, eye checks, and hunting aptitude. Because the breed is still relatively uncommon outside Portugal and specialist gundog circles, buyers should verify registration, temperament, and the level of working drive expected in the litter.
