Posavac Hound
The Posavac Hound is a Croatian scenthound from the Sava River valley, or Posavina, and is also known as the Posavski gonič. It is a medium, sturdy dog with dropped ears, a dense short coat, and the warm red or wheaten coloring with white markings typical of the breed. Developed for hunting hare, fox, and sometimes wild boar in forests and broken country, it is valued for persistence, a useful voice, and the ability to follow scent in difficult conditions.
In homes outside active hunting circles, the Posavac Hound needs work that resembles its original job: long walks, tracking, mantrailing, or other scent-based exercise. It can be friendly and steady indoors after a proper outlet, but a bored hound may roam or vocalize. Secure fencing and realistic expectations about off-leash reliability are important. Coat care is straightforward, with attention to ears, feet, and tick checks after field time. The breed is still uncommon outside the Balkans, so imported puppies or breeding stock should come with clear registration, health records, and evidence of stable temperament.
