Rat Terrier
The Rat Terrier is an American farm terrier developed for vermin control, small-game hunting, and general homestead work. Its background includes several quick terrier and small hunting breeds, which helps explain the smooth coat, sharp expression, strong prey drive, and range of sizes seen in the breed. Rat Terriers are often white with black, tan, chocolate, blue, or red markings, and many have a compact body built for speed rather than heaviness.
Care is usually straightforward, but the mind behind the tidy coat needs work. A Rat Terrier thrives with training, games, digging outlets, and controlled chances to chase appropriate targets. Secure yards matter, as do introductions to cats, poultry, and pocket pets. Breeders often watch knees, hips, heart, eyes, and bite quality while also selecting for stable nerve. In the right home, the breed is efficient, people-oriented, and quick to learn, provided boredom is not allowed to write the schedule.
