Rize Koyun
The Rize Koyun is a regional Turkish livestock guardian associated with Rize and the wet, mountainous Black Sea highlands. The name is often used descriptively for sheep dogs from that area rather than for a globally standardized kennel breed. These dogs are generally large, hard, weather-resistant guardians selected by shepherds for staying with sheep and confronting wolves or stray dogs on steep summer pastures. Coats tend to be dense and practical for rain, mud, and cool upland nights, with appearance varying between valleys and family lines.
Keeping a Rize Koyun outside its working setting requires realistic expectations. It needs livestock or a large secure property, early bonding to the animals it will guard, and careful introductions to visitors and other dogs. Dense coats can mat behind the ears and shed heavily, especially in seasonal changes. Because documented pedigrees are limited and names may overlap with other Turkish shepherd dogs, buyers should look for transparent local knowledge, sound structure, and proven guardian temperament rather than a fashionable rare-breed label.
