Romanian Carpathian Shepherd
The Romanian Carpathian Shepherd, or Carpatin, is a large livestock guardian from the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Shepherds selected it for protecting sheep and cattle from wolves, bears, and thieves while moving through forested and alpine pasture. It is less massive than some mastiff-style guardians, with a strong rectangular body, weatherproof double coat, and a typical wolf-gray or sable-gray appearance that suits its mountain background. The breed is recognized internationally, but its identity is still closely tied to working flocks and rural Romanian shepherd culture.
Carpathian Shepherds are not high-speed herding dogs; they are territorial guardians that make decisions at the boundary of their flock or home. They need space, secure fencing, early socialization, and a handler who can guide a powerful, independent dog without constant confrontation. The coat sheds seasonally and benefits from thorough brushing, especially during coat blow. Growing puppies should be kept lean and exercised sensibly to protect joints. Breeding programs commonly value hip and elbow health, stable nerves, and the calm, watchful temperament needed around livestock and family.
