Saint-Usuge Spaniel
The Saint-Usuge Spaniel, or Epagneul de Saint-Usuge, is a rare French gundog from the Bresse and Burgundy region around the village of Saint-Usuge. It is a medium-sized pointing spaniel with a slightly long body, feathered ears, a gently waved brown coat, and a soft, thoughtful expression. The breed nearly disappeared during the twentieth century and was rebuilt from a small regional population. Hunters value it for methodical searching, pointing, and retrieving on small game, especially in woodland, hedgerow, and wet meadow country.
As a companion, the Saint-Usuge Spaniel is usually described as close-working and biddable, but it still needs regular field exercise or scent work to stay settled. Its feathering collects burrs and mud, so ears, feet, and tail fringes need attention after cover. The small gene pool makes careful breeder selection important; buyers should ask about working ability, temperament, and health history rather than relying on rarity alone. It tends to suit people who want a practical hunting partner that can also live calmly indoors.
