Segugio Italiano a Pelo Forte
Segugio Italiano a Pelo Forte is the rough-coated Italian hound, the wirehaired counterpart to the smooth Segugio Italiano. The name means Italian hound with strong or coarse hair, and the coat gives the dog a harder outline, often with a slightly bearded muzzle and protective texture. It is a lean, medium-sized scent hound with long ears, a serious expression, and traditional fawn or black-and-tan coloring. Its main work is trailing hare and, in some areas, larger game, with voice and persistence valued by hunters.
The rough coat sheds less visibly than a smooth coat but still needs combing and occasional hand stripping or plucking to keep dead hair from packing in. This is an active hound that fits best where long walks, tracking, hunting, or other scent work are routine. Secure fencing matters, because the dog is bred to commit to a line once it finds scent. Breeders and buyers should discuss working style, sociability in packs, hip and general orthopedic soundness, and whether puppies are being raised for field use, home life, or both.
