Segugio Italiano a Pelo Raso
The Segugio Italiano a Pelo Raso is the smooth-coated form of the Italian Segugio, a medium-sized scenthound used for centuries on hare and other game across Italy. Also called the Italian Shorthaired Hound, it has a dry, athletic outline, long low-set ears, a keen nose, and the ringing voice expected of a pack or brace hound. The short coat is close and glossy, most commonly in shades of fawn or black and tan, and the breed is distinct from the rough-coated Segugio Italiano a Pelo Forte.
In homes, these dogs need more than casual walks. They settle best where scenting, running, hunting, or structured tracking can satisfy their working instincts, and secure fencing matters because a hot trail can override recall. The smooth coat is simple to maintain, though ears and feet deserve regular checks after field work. Segugi are usually social with people and other dogs, but their independence calls for patient training rather than force. Buyers outside Italy may find limited litters and should ask about working temperament, sound movement, and health history.
