Slovak Cuvac
The Slovak Cuvac, or Slovenský čuvač, is a large white livestock guardian from the mountains of Slovakia and the wider Carpathian sheep-farming tradition. Its name is linked with watchfulness, and the breed was developed to stay near flocks, yards, and shepherds rather than to drive stock. A dense weatherproof coat, strong bone, dark eyes, and pendant ears give it the look of a classic Central European mountain guardian; the white color helped shepherds distinguish their dogs from predators in poor light.
Keeping a Slovak Cuvac is different from keeping a casual large pet. It needs space, secure boundaries, and early exposure to people, livestock, and routine handling so its natural suspicion does not become indiscriminate guarding. The coat sheds heavily and benefits from thorough brushing, especially during seasonal blowout, while hot climates require shade and water. Breeding programs should value stable guardian temperament as much as size or coat, with attention to hips, elbows, and working nerve.
