Slovak Rough-Haired Pointer
The Slovak Rough-Haired Pointer is a versatile gun dog from Slovakia, also known as the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer or Slovenský hrubosrstý stavač. It was developed for pointing, retrieving, and tracking across varied central European hunting country. The breed usually has a harsh, protective coat in gray or gray-roan tones, with a beard and eyebrows that give it a rugged field-dog look. It is meant to be biddable and close-working while still having enough drive for demanding days outside.
This is a poor match for a home that wants only an ornamental wire-coated dog. Regular fieldwork, structured exercise, scent training, or active sport gives the Slovak Rough-Haired Pointer a job for its body and nose. The coat needs brushing and occasional hand maintenance to keep texture and prevent mats. Breeding programs pay attention to hips, eyes, temperament, working aptitude, and coat quality, because a useful dog must handle water, cover, game contact, and family life with equal steadiness.
