Slovenský Kopov
The slovenský kopov, often called the Slovakian hound, is a medium-sized scent hound from Slovakia especially associated with hunting wild boar. Despite the occasional English name Black Forest hound, it is not a German Black Forest breed; the dog is a Slovak working hound with a glossy black coat and tan markings. It is compact, agile, and loud on trail, bred to work difficult woodland cover with persistence and enough courage to keep dangerous game moving for the hunter.
A kopov needs more than ordinary walks if it is kept away from the hunting field. Scent games, tracking, and long outings help use its stamina, while secure fencing is important because a fresh trail can override recall. The breed can be devoted at home but independent in work, so calm, consistent training starts early. Responsible buyers should seek lines selected for stable temperament and functional structure, not only voice and drive, and should be prepared for a strong prey instinct around small animals.
