Smaland Hound
The Smaland hound, or Smålandsstövare, is a Swedish scent hound from the forested province of Småland. It developed from local farm and hunting dogs used by rural hunters who needed a compact, hardy hound for hare and fox. The breed is usually black and tan, sometimes with small white markings, and is noted for the tail variation seen in its history: some dogs are born with a natural bobtail while others carry a full tail.
In human hands the Smaland hound remains a working scenthound first. It is most content with regular tracking, hunting, or long countryside exercise, and it needs secure areas because its nose can carry it far. At home it is generally manageable when its energy has been used, but recall training and socialization around other dogs should not be neglected. Grooming the short coat is simple, though ears and feet deserve checks after work in brush. Breeders tend to value hunting voice, stamina, and a steady disposition.
