Smooth Fox Terrier
The smooth fox terrier is a small, athletic British dog breed developed for foxhunting, where it worked with hounds and entered cover when a fox went to ground. It shares early roots with the wire fox terrier, but the smooth is defined by a short, close coat, a clean outline, folded V-shaped ears, and a lively, forward expression. Most are predominantly white with black, tan, or black-and-tan markings, a practical pattern for a terrier working around horses and hounds.
In a home, the breed is energetic, quick to notice movement, and often much tougher than its size suggests. Daily exercise, games that use the nose, and consistent training help channel the chase and digging instincts. Secure fencing matters, as many smooth fox terriers will pursue cats, squirrels, or unfamiliar dogs if allowed. Grooming is simple compared with wire-coated terriers, but the smooth coat still sheds. Breeders and buyers commonly discuss patellar, eye, and hearing health in addition to temperament.
