Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
The soft coated wheaten terrier is a medium-sized Irish farm terrier, traditionally used for vermin control, watch duties, and general work around small holdings. Its best-known feature is the soft, silky, wheaten-colored coat, which may mature from darker puppy shading into the pale gold to warm honey tones expected in adults. The breed is less angular and severe than some terriers, but it still has the square build, keen expression, and self-confident attitude of a working earth dog.
Wheatens are often chosen by families who want a sociable terrier, yet they need more grooming and training than the casual label of low shedding suggests. The coat mats if it is not combed to the skin, and many owners keep a practical trim rather than a long show outline. They usually enjoy active walks, training games, and participation in family life, but early manners are important because greetings can be exuberant. Responsible breeders pay attention to hip, eye, kidney, and intestinal protein-loss conditions known in the breed.
