Spino Degli Iblei
The Spino degli Iblei, also called Cane Spino degli Iblei, is a regional livestock guardian dog from the Hyblaean or Iblei area of southeastern Sicily. It is generally described as a rustic, medium-large to large sheepdog with a harsh, bristly coat suited to scrubby pasture and exposed hills. Because it is a local working population rather than a widely standardized international breed, accounts of size, color, and exact ancestry can vary.
Where the type is still kept, its value is practical flock protection. It suits farms, shepherds, and conservation-minded breed projects better than casual urban ownership. Like other guardian dogs, it needs early familiarity with the animals and people it is expected to tolerate, plus secure boundaries and calm handling. The rough coat should be checked for burrs, seeds, and matting after work in dry Sicilian terrain. Anyone seeking one should look for transparent local knowledge rather than relying on a rare-breed label alone.
