Sporting Lucas Terrier
The Sporting Lucas terrier is a small British working terrier developed from Lucas Terrier lines with added working terrier blood, a late twentieth-century effort associated with Brian Plummer and breeders who wanted a compact dog for ratting and earth work. It is related to, but not identical with, the older Lucas Terrier. Typical dogs are sturdy, low to moderate on leg, keen in expression, and rough or broken coated, often with white and tan, black, or grizzle markings.
Because numbers are limited and recognition varies, Sporting Lucas terriers can differ more between kennels than long-established show breeds. The best placements are terrier-savvy homes that can provide secure fencing, digging outlets, brisk exercise, and clear management around wildlife and small pets. Coat care is usually straightforward, with occasional stripping or tidying depending on texture. Buyers should ask what the breeder means by Sporting Lucas, how the parents work or live, and what health and temperament information is recorded.
