St. Hubert Jura Hound
The Saint Hubert Jura hound is a rare Swiss scenthound variety associated with the Jura Mountains and the old Saint Hubert hound influence behind many European trailing dogs. It is usually discussed as a form or close relative of the Jura Laufhund rather than a widely separate modern breed. Dogs of this type are medium sized, smooth coated, long eared, and heavier in head than many Swiss hounds, commonly black and tan or tan with a dark saddle. Their traditional work was following hare, fox, and other game by scent over wooded, uneven country, giving tongue as they trailed.
Keeping one is mainly a working-hound proposition. The breed suits people who can provide regular scent work, long off-lead running only in safe areas, and secure fencing, because a good trail can override recall. Indoors they may be calm and sociable, but they are not low-exercise companions. Ear care, sound feet, and lean condition matter for a dog expected to hunt rough ground. Because the Saint Hubert Jura hound is uncommon outside its home region and registry treatment varies, prospective buyers need to confirm whether a litter is registered as this variety, as Jura hounds more broadly, or as another Swiss scenthound.
