Standard Schnauzer
The Standard Schnauzer is the original medium-sized Schnauzer of Germany, developed as an all-purpose farm dog for guarding carts and yards, killing rats, and accompanying livestock to market. It predates the Miniature and Giant Schnauzers and still shows that middle-ground build: square, sturdy, and agile without being bulky. The breed is recognized by its harsh wiry double coat, arched eyebrows, and whiskered muzzle. Salt and pepper and solid black are the classic colors, and a properly textured coat gives protection in bad weather while preserving the crisp outline.
Daily life with a Standard Schnauzer is easiest when the dog has work for both body and mind. They are alert watchdogs and quick learners, often successful in obedience, agility, tracking, and scent games, but they can be pushy if rules are inconsistent. The coat is traditionally hand-stripped for harsh texture, while clipped coats are softer and simpler for many companion homes. Regular brushing of the beard and leg furnishings prevents mats and food buildup. Sensible breeding emphasizes stable temperament and screening for problems seen in the breed, including hip, eye, and heart concerns.
