Stephens Stock
Stephens stock, often called the Stephens Stock Cur or Stephens Cur, is an Appalachian working dog strain associated with the Stephens family of Kentucky. It developed within the broader mountain cur tradition, where dogs were valued for treeing squirrel and raccoon, finding game in rough woods, and serving as practical farm companions. The type is usually medium sized, athletic, and short coated, with many dogs black with white markings, though working ability has mattered more than cosmetic uniformity.
These dogs are best understood as hunting curs, not generic black farm dogs. A good Stephens stock dog is expected to range, locate game, tree with confidence, and still handle for its person. That drive can be frustrating in a home that offers only leash walks and no outlet for scenting, tracking, or structured field work. Secure containment and early livestock and household manners are important. Because names and registry status may differ between cur organizations, buyers should ask about the line's actual hunting record, health, temperament, and how pups are started.
