Tenterfield Terrier
The Tenterfield Terrier is an Australian small terrier descended from smooth-coated British working terriers that traveled with settlers and were kept for ratting, hunting, and farm work. The name was later attached to the type through the town of Tenterfield, New South Wales, and the breed is distinct from, though closely related in history to, the Miniature Fox Terrier. It is a compact, athletic dog with a short coat, keen expression, and white-based markings often combined with black, tan, liver, or tricolor patches.
A Tenterfield Terrier is easy to house because of its size, but it is still a hunting terrier at heart. Regular running, games, and training keep it settled, while fences and recall practice are important around small animals. Grooming is minimal, although teeth, nails, weight, and patella health should not be ignored. In Australia, registered breeding has helped define size and type, so puppy buyers benefit from asking about pedigree, health history, and whether the breeder selects for stable household temperament as well as working spark.
