Thai Ridgeback
The Thai Ridgeback is an athletic, medium-sized dog from Thailand, especially associated with the eastern provinces where it was used for hunting, guarding, and traveling with carts. Its defining feature is the ridge of hair along the back that grows opposite the rest of the coat, a trait shared by only a few dog breeds. The body is lean and muscular, with a wedge-shaped head, large prick ears, and a short coat most often seen in red, black, blue, or fawn.
Daily management suits people who understand independent, prey-aware dogs. A Thai Ridgeback can be clean and quiet indoors, yet it needs secure fencing, careful introductions, and training that starts early before chasing and guarding habits set. The short coat requires little grooming, but the breed is not built for prolonged cold without protection. Breeders and buyers should discuss hip screening and dermoid sinus, a congenital skin defect associated with ridged breeds. Because the breed is still uncommon in many countries, temperament, health testing, and honest placement matter more than rare color or novelty.
