Toy Fox Terrier
The toy fox terrier is an American toy-terrier breed developed from small Smooth Fox Terriers with influence from toy breeds such as the Chihuahua, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, and Italian Greyhound in some histories. It keeps the outline and prey drive of a ratting terrier but in a compact dog typically under seven pounds. The coat is smooth and easy to recognize: mostly white with a dark head and tidy black, tan, chocolate, or tricolor markings depending on the standard.
This is a quick, athletic house dog that needs more mental work than its size suggests. Toy fox terriers enjoy tricks, scent games, barn hunt, agility, and short brisk walks, yet they also need protection from rough handling and cold weather. Their terrier instincts can make them chase squirrels, rodents, and small pets, so recall training and secure yards matter. Grooming is minimal beyond nail, dental, and ear care. Breeders commonly watch for patellar luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and eye disorders; some lines also require attention to congenital hypothyroidism with goiter.
