Toy Manchester Terrier
The toy Manchester terrier is the small variety of the Manchester Terrier in some registries and a close relative of the English Toy Terrier tradition. It descends from black-and-tan ratting terriers refined in Britain and later maintained as a sleek urban companion. The breed is easy to spot: glossy black coat, rich mahogany tan points, a narrow wedge-shaped head, almond eyes, and a taut, athletic body. In the United States standard, the toy variety is separated mainly by size and has naturally erect ears.
Although small enough for apartment life, a toy Manchester is still a terrier with speed, curiosity, and a strong interest in moving prey. Daily walks, play, and reward-based training keep it settled indoors, while secure fencing prevents sudden dashes after wildlife. The smooth coat needs little brushing, but these dogs often appreciate a sweater in cold or wet weather. Dental care is important in the toy size. Prospective owners should ask breeders about patellas and eye health, and whether von Willebrand disease or thyroid testing is used in the line.
