Valdueza

Valdueza usually refers to the Perro Montero Valdueza, a Spanish big-game hunting dog associated with the Valdueza estate and the tradition of montería. The breed was developed in the twentieth century to suit pack hunting for wild boar and deer in the scrub, oak woodland, and dehesa landscapes of Spain. It is a large, rustic dog with a strong body, long legs, hanging ears, and a rough or coarse coat, often light-colored with tan, orange, or similar patches. Its ancestry is generally described as combining Spanish hunting dogs with mastiff and griffon-type influence.

These dogs are kept mainly by hunters and kennels that can use a strong, vocal, scent-driven pack dog. Daily life requires space, secure fencing, steady handling, and conditioning before hard work in hot or rough country. Coat care is uncomplicated, but burrs, ears, feet, and hydration need attention after hunts. Outside Spain the Valdueza is uncommon, so buyers should be prepared for limited availability and variation in documentation. Good breeding programs emphasize stamina, nose, pack manners, courage around game, and stable behavior with people rather than size alone.
