Valencian Terrier
Valencian terrier is the English name often used for the Ratonero Valenciano, or Gos Rater Valencià, a small Spanish ratting dog from the Valencian Community. It is a compact, smooth-coated farm and household dog developed for catching rats, mice, and other vermin around barns, orchards, stables, and market gardens. Many dogs are black, tan, and white, with alert ears and a quick, terrier-like outline, although type and registration details can vary outside Spain. Its value was practical: a nimble dog that could work tight spaces and still live closely with people.
Care is closer to an active working terrier than a decorative toy. The breed needs daily movement, games that use its nose and chase instincts, and early training to keep barking and prey drive manageable. The short coat is simple to maintain, but secure fencing matters because these dogs are fast and curious. Buyers outside the Valencian region should verify breeder knowledge, health testing, and whether local or national registration is available, as the name is sometimes used loosely for small Spanish ratters.
