Welsh Springer Spaniel
The Welsh springer spaniel is a medium-sized gundog from Wales, recognized by its rich red-and-white coat, feathered ears, and compact, workmanlike build. Also called the Welshie, it was developed to quarter ground, flush game, and retrieve for hunters, with a steadier, more moderate outline than many modern English springers. The clear red markings are part of its identity, but underneath is an active sporting spaniel with stamina and a strong nose.
In homes, Welsh springer spaniels usually need more than casual walks. They do well with field training, tracking, retrieving games, hiking, or other work that lets them use scent and cooperation. Many are close with family while reserved with strangers, so early socialization matters. Their feathering collects burrs and mud, and ears should be checked after swimming or heavy cover. Responsible breeders commonly discuss hip and eye screening, temperament, and whether dogs come from field, show, or mixed-purpose lines.
