Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a small terrier from northern England, originally connected with mill districts, urban ratting dogs, and later the toy-dog world. Its long, silky blue and tan coat is one of the breed's signatures, though many pets wear a shorter trim for easier care. Beneath the show coat is a compact terrier with bright eyes, confident carriage, and more boldness than its size suggests. Well-bred Yorkies should feel fine-boned but not weak.
Practical care centers on coat, teeth, and safe handling. A full show coat needs daily grooming and wrapping, while clipped pets still require brushing, bathing, nail care, and regular dental attention. Small size makes stairs, rough play, and larger dogs worth managing thoughtfully. Breeders commonly watch for kneecap, liver shunt, dental, and tracheal concerns, and good homes give training rather than excusing rudeness as cuteness. The Yorkshire Terrier is at its best when treated as a real terrier in a small body.
