Teddy
The teddy guinea pig has a short, dense, raised coat with a springy feel. Its hair lies slightly forward from the rump toward the head and can form a small cap over the forehead. The coat should look even and plush rather than smooth, long or rosetted. Teddy is recognized in ARBA's Standard of Perfection for 2026 to 2030. It also has a British Cavy Council Full Standard; the current Teddy Cavy Club standard was updated in 2024. The European standard calls it US Teddy, distinguishing it from the longer coated Swiss teddy or CH Teddy.
Teddy and rex are separate breeds even though both have a short, textured coat. British teddy classes can include any color or combination of colors, with no points awarded for color or markings. The density, bounciness and slightly harsh texture of the coat are central to its show appearance. Teddy Satin is a separate ARBA breed with a satin sheen. For exhibition, the coat is kept clean and free of grease, with an even surface and no flat patches.
