A metal guppy is selected for metallic sheen on the head, body, or fins, created by reflective pigment cells that give the fish a plated or mirror-like look. The label may appear as metal, metal head, or in combination with other strains such as cobra, tuxedo, or dragon. Metal guppies can be subtle silver-gray fish or bright reflective lines with strong contrast against colored tails.

Metallic traits can shift with age, lighting, and outcrossing, so breeders judge mature fish and keep related groups separated when a line is worth preserving. In display tanks, clear water and moderate lighting show the sheen best without stressing the fish. Buyers should still check basics first: straight spine, active swimming, clean fins, and females from a healthy group. Shine alone does not compensate for weak livebearer stock.
