Wild Type
Wild-type guppies are Poecilia reticulata that resemble the small, variable fish found in natural and feral populations rather than heavily selected aquarium strains. Females are usually plain gray, olive, or tan, while males carry modest spots, bars, or metallic flashes that can differ from one drainage or population to another. The look is less uniform than fancy guppies, but it reflects the species' adaptable livebearing form.
Keepers often choose wild-type guppies for biotope-style tanks, hardy colony breeding, or research lines where natural behavior matters as much as color. They still need clean warm water, compatible tankmates, and protection for fry, but they are not managed for oversized fins or extreme pattern. Source matters: a line described as locality-based should be kept separate from mixed fancy stock if the keeper wants to preserve its history.
