Unclassified Strain

Unclassified Strain

Unclassified strain is a practical label for a Drosophila melanogaster stock that has not been assigned to a recognized laboratory strain, mutant line, or documented genetic background. The flies may look wild type, may show visible markers such as white eyes, or may come from a cross whose descendants were kept without full records. The label helps avoid implying a level of genetic certainty that the culture does not have.

Such stocks can still be useful for demonstrations, husbandry practice, or preliminary observation, but they should be kept out of experiments that depend on a defined genotype unless the line is characterized first. Care is the same as for other laboratory fruit flies: clean medium, regular transfers, controlled temperature, and protection from mites, mold, and accidental mixing. A lab should record visible traits, origin if known, and any future testing that clarifies the strain.

Colors: White Eye, Wild Type
