Mixed Breed
A mixed breed laboratory rat is a Rattus norvegicus animal or colony that does not fit one named laboratory rat stock such as Wistar or Sprague Dawley. The group may have albino appearance, but that alone does not identify its breeding background. Mixed breed is a practical label for rats with combined, informal, or incomplete ancestry rather than a standardized research line.
Mixed breed laboratory rats can be suitable for education, companion placement where appropriate, or general husbandry, but they should not be used when a protocol or breeding plan requires a defined stock. Good management includes calm handling, social housing when compatible, clean bedding, enrichment, and records of origin and pairings. Keeping the label plain helps prevent accidental promotion of undocumented rats as a recognized line.
