Sprague Dawley
Sprague Dawley is a widely used outbred albino laboratory rat stock of Rattus norvegicus. It is a large, white-coated research rat used across toxicology, pharmacology, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, and behavior studies. As an outbred stock, Sprague Dawley rats are managed to preserve controlled genetic diversity rather than the near-uniformity expected in an inbred line. Supplier colony, barrier status, and breeding method can influence growth curves, temperament, and study outcomes.
Practical management requires careful source tracking, social housing when compatible, sturdy cages, enrichment, measured feeding, and calm handling that respects the rat's size and strength. Breeding managers watch litter size, maternal behavior, body weight, health trends, and retirement timing so the stock remains useful and humane to maintain. Outside research settings, these rats should still be treated as domestic rats with strong needs for companionship, space, and veterinary care. For formal work, records are essential because stock differences can change how data are interpreted.
