Unknown Breed
An unknown breed laboratory rat is a Rattus norvegicus animal whose laboratory rat identity is clear, but whose strain or stock background is not. It may be albino and may resemble common stocks such as Wistar or Sprague Dawley, yet appearance cannot confirm that history. The label is most useful when records are incomplete, animals are transferred informally, or rescue and teaching contexts lack source details.
Unknown-breed rats should be managed as undocumented animals rather than folded into named colonies. Standard rat care still applies: social compatibility, enrichment, secure housing, good ventilation, and gentle handling. For breeding or placement, notes on sex, age, temperament, health, and source are more valuable than guessing the line. Research use should be limited unless background does not matter.
