Altex
The Altex is a modern United States meat rabbit line, its name usually explained as a blend of Alabama and Texas. It was developed through university-linked selection for fast growth, large litters, and commercial carcass traits rather than fancy markings. Accounts of its foundation commonly include Flemish Giant, Champagne d'Argent, and Californian ancestry, producing a large, sturdy rabbit with a practical meat-pen build. It is not as widely standardized in the show world as long-established exhibition breeds.
Altex rabbits are most often discussed by small farms, meat-rabbit breeders, and youth production projects. Management centers on sound feet, good ventilation, and enough feeder space for rapid-growing litters; oversized or soft-fleshed breeders should not be kept only because they are large. Buyers should ask about weights at weaning, litter size, temperament, and heat tolerance in the seller's colony. As with any domestic rabbit, high-quality hay and steady water are needed even in production systems.
