Beveren (US)
The American Beveren is the United States standard version of the old Belgian-British Beveren rabbit, maintained within the North American show and heritage-breed community. It is a large semi-arched rabbit with a mandolin-shaped profile, strong bone, broad hindquarters, and long ears carried in a wide V. US exhibition descriptions have centered on blue, black, and blue-eyed white Beverens, with blue remaining the color most closely tied to the breed's history. Its size, fur quality, and calm working temperament come from a period when rabbits were bred for both pelts and meat.
In the United States the Beveren is uncommon, so breeding decisions often involve more than producing show winners. Small herds benefit from planned pairings, exchanged stock, and attention to litter vigor so the gene pool does not narrow around a few winning animals. Housing should allow a big rabbit to stretch and move, and hot weather management matters because heavy breeds can overheat. Buyers should ask about pedigree, color variety, adult size, and whether a breeder is selecting to the current US standard.
