Chinchilla Giganta (UK)

The Chinchilla Giganta is the British large chinchilla rabbit, a heavier version of the chinchilla-coated domestic rabbit maintained under United Kingdom fancy standards. It should not be confused automatically with every rabbit called Giant Chinchilla elsewhere, because national standards and histories differ. The breed carries the classic chinchilla color: a slate undercolor and banded hair that gives the surface a silver-grey appearance with black ticking. Its size, broad body, and dense coat reflect the old dual-purpose interest in meat and pelt production, while the color links it to the Standard Chinchilla family.

Keeping Chinchilla Gigantas is closer to managing a large meat-type rabbit than a small pet breed. They need roomy, well-ventilated housing, firm dry resting surfaces, and careful control of weight so that size does not turn into poor condition or sore hocks. Grooming is modest, but the coat should be checked during molts because loose dense fur can build up quickly. Breeders work to balance scale with type, fertility, and clean ring color; rare or scattered lines benefit from planned matings rather than repeated use of the same buck. Prospective buyers in Britain should ask which standard the rabbits are bred to and see mature examples if possible.
