Giant Chinchilla (US)
The Giant Chinchilla (US) is the American form of the large chinchilla-colored rabbit developed for meat, fur, and exhibition. In US history it is strongly associated with efforts to scale up the Standard Chinchilla type into a bigger commercial animal. A correct rabbit combines a broad, useful body with the chinchilla coat pattern, where banded hairs create a bright silver-gray surface over darker undercolor and pearl-like intermediate bands.
US Giant Chinchilla breeders work against two easy mistakes: losing commercial body while keeping color, or keeping size while allowing poor chinchilla markings. Housing should suit a large rabbit, with dry footing, space to stretch, and good summer ventilation. The short coat needs modest grooming, but molt can temporarily blur color and ring definition. Buyers should ask about mature weights, litter performance, and show standard familiarity. For a homestead, the breed offers a historic dual-purpose option; for exhibitors, color clarity and body depth are both essential.
