Mellerud Rabbit
The Mellerud Rabbit is a Swedish landrace rabbit known from conservation programs rather than mass-market pet breeding. Modern descriptions usually note two color presentations: albino, or black with white Dutch-like markings. It was preserved after near loss and is treated in Sweden as a landrace resource, so the name carries more historical and genetic meaning than a simple color label.
Management of Mellerud rabbits is tied to stewardship. Gene bank work, controlled breeding, and accurate ancestry records help protect the remaining population from casual crossing or bottlenecks. The rabbits are medium-sized enough to need practical hutches or pens, not tiny decorative housing, and conservation keepers often value hardiness, fertility, and local adaptation alongside appearance. Pet homes outside that context should be honest about whether they have a documented Mellerud or only a black-and-white rabbit with similar markings.
