Patagonian is an old domestic-rabbit name that needs careful handling. In historical breed lists it appears as a large rabbit associated with giant or utility stock, but it should not be confused with the Patagonian mara, a South American rodent sometimes called a hare. Modern, standardized Patagonian rabbit populations are not commonly encountered, and older accounts are not always consistent about color, ear carriage, or exact ancestry.
When the name appears in a pedigree note, breed list, or local sale, the safest approach is to treat it as a historic or regional label until more evidence is supplied.
