Sable (cchl), also called light chinchilla, is an allele of the rabbit color gene, TYR. It removes yellow pigment and lightens black, more on the body than on the ears, nose, feet and tail; in a self background it gives sable coats, and with dilute smoke pearl, two copies generally giving darker shades. It ranks below full color and chinchilla and above Himalayan and albino.
Sable (cchl) is part of the Color series: Full Color (C), Chinchilla (cchd), Sable (cchl), Himalayan (ch), Albino (c). It shows over Himalayan (ch) and Albino (c) and is hidden by Full Color (C) and Chinchilla (cchd).
Incompletely dominant over the lower alleles: cchl/cchl is generally darker than cchl/c on the same genetic background; seal is the usual name on a suitable self-color background. Whether cchl/ch differs from cchl/c is disputed. The sable allele has no confirmed DNA variant.
