Satin (US)
The United States Satin is the American standard breed that grew from the satin mutation first noticed in Havana rabbits in Indiana. It is a commercial-type rabbit with a lustrous normal-length coat and a set of recognized color varieties. Unlike Rex, the Satin does not have a plush shortened coat; its special quality comes from the structure of the hair shaft and the way light passes through it.
American Satin breeders usually select for depth, smoothness, flesh, and coat brilliance together. The breed can serve show, meat, fur, and homestead purposes, but no single use should excuse weak feet, poor shoulders, or dull condition. Pet owners should expect a medium-large rabbit with ordinary rabbit needs for hay, space, and heat management. When a listing says satin, confirm whether it means the full United States Satin breed, a Mini Satin, a Satin Angora, or a cross carrying sheen.
