Standard Chinchilla (US)
The Standard Chinchilla in the United States is the American fancy's moderate member of the chinchilla rabbit family, smaller than the American Chinchilla and far smaller than the Giant Chinchilla. It is recognized for a compact commercial body and the layered chinchilla coat, where bands of color create a bright gray surface with darker shading. The name can confuse newcomers because it describes a rabbit breed, not a color option across every rabbit.
United States breeders usually pay close attention to weight range, body balance, ring definition, and the clean contrast between surface color and undercolor. The breed can work for exhibition, homestead interest, or preservation breeding, provided housing is dry, well ventilated, and large enough for a medium rabbit to move normally. Buyers should ask whether stock comes from show lines, conservation-minded herds, or mixed chinchilla-colored ancestry, since the same visual pattern can appear outside the recognized breed.
