Unknown Breed
An unknown breed rabbit is a domestic rabbit of uncertain ancestry, not a separate breed. Many rescues, shelters, veterinary records, and pet listings use the label when a rabbit is mixed-breed, lacks papers, or has traits that do not clearly match a recognized standard. The animal may still show clues, such as dwarf size, lop ears, rex fur, Angora-like wool, Dutch markings, agouti coloring, broken patterning, or blue-eyed white coloration. Because domestic rabbits share the species Oryctolagus cuniculus, breed uncertainty does not make the rabbit less manageable or less suitable as a companion.
Practical care should be based on the rabbit in front of you: adult weight, coat type, ear shape, teeth, temperament, and medical history. A short-coated mixed rabbit may need only routine brushing during molts, while a woolly or lionhead-type rabbit may need frequent combing. Unknown-age rabbits benefit from veterinary sexing, nail and dental checks, and gradual diet changes built around grass hay. For adopters, temperament and health are better guides than a guessed breed name. If breeding is being considered, uncertain ancestry is a strong reason to avoid producing litters unless there is a clear welfare or conservation purpose.
