V-Line

V-line rabbits are a selected commercial and research line rather than a traditional fancy breed. The line was developed in Spain at the Polytechnic University of Valencia from maternal rabbit stock and has been selected for reproductive performance, especially litter size and young weaned. V-line animals are typically medium-sized, meat-type domestic rabbits with white coats and red eyes in many programs, although local crossbred use may make appearance less uniform. They are commonly used as dam-line rabbits in meat production systems and in studies of reproduction, growth, welfare, and nutrition.

Management of V-line rabbits is usually production based, with controlled breeding schedules, nest box supervision, measured feeding, and attention to doe body condition between kindling and weaning. Good records matter because the value of the line comes from known selection history and predictable maternal performance, not from color or show markings. Housing must support hygiene, ventilation, resting comfort, and heat control, since reproductive lines can suffer when does are stressed or overweight. Smallholders considering V-line stock should ask whether they are buying pure line animals or commercial crosses, and whether the genetics suit their climate, feed resources, and market.
