Barnyard Mix
Barnyard mix turkey is an informal name for mixed-ancestry domestic turkeys of Meleagris gallopavo kept in backyard, homestead, and small farm flocks. These birds are not a standardized breed or color variety; they may show bronze, black, blue slate, Narragansett, red, buff, white, pied, or mottled patterns depending on the parents. Body size is just as variable. Some are active heritage-type birds that can mate naturally, while others carry broad-breasted genetics that produce heavier meat birds but less predictable long-term soundness.
Mixed turkeys can be practical for home meat, hardy range flocks, or people who enjoy varied plumage, but they are not suitable for preserving a named heritage variety. Ask about parent size, age at processing, fertility, and whether the flock has been kept separate from chickens in areas where blackhead disease is a concern. Care should be planned around the largest likely adult: strong fencing, predator-safe night housing, dry brooding for poults, and turkey feed with enough protein and minerals for steady growth.
