Karan Swiss
Karan Swiss cattle are an Indian dairy crossbred population developed at the National Dairy Research Institute by combining Brown Swiss and Sahiwal genetics. The intent was to bring higher milk production from Brown Swiss into cattle that could still cope better with Indian heat, disease pressure, and management conditions than many straight temperate dairy breeds. They are usually discussed as a research-developed dairy breed or strain rather than a traditional village breed.
On farms, Karan Swiss cattle need dairy-level feeding and health care, but their value depends on balancing production with adaptation. Producers should watch heat stress, mastitis, fertility, and body condition, especially if cows are pushed for higher yield. Breeding programs rely on records for milk, fat, calving interval, and survivability under local conditions. Buyers should ask whether animals are genuine Karan Swiss lines and how they have performed outside research herds.
