Ciobănesc Românesc Carpatin
The Ciobănesc Românesc Carpatin, or Romanian Carpathian Shepherd Dog, is a large livestock guardian from Romania's Carpathian Mountains. It developed with shepherds who needed dogs able to live with flocks and confront wolves, bears, and stray dogs without constant direction. The breed is substantial but not ponderous, with a strong rectangular body, weather-resistant double coat, and a wolf-gray or sable-gray appearance that helps distinguish it from the white Mioritic and Bucovina shepherd dogs. Its temperament is typically steady, watchful, and deeply bonded to its territory and stock.
Management is closer to that of other serious guardian breeds than to a pet herding dog. Puppies need calm exposure to livestock, family routines, visitors, and boundaries while they are young enough to accept them. Mature dogs require strong fencing, room to patrol, and handlers who understand independent decision-making; they may bark at night and challenge unfamiliar animals or people if not guided. Coat care is moderate most of the year, with heavier shedding during seasonal coat changes, and hot climates call for shade and water. Conservation of working type depends on selecting for nerve, size without heaviness, sound hips, and dependable stock behavior, not only for an imposing outline.
